Waukegan Portraits 1977 by Jack Sal is a series of 47 portraits taken in the summer of 1977. The protagonists are children ages 6 to 14 with special needs who had attended a summer photography course taught by Sal at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts in Waukegan, in the Chicago area. At the end of the course, Sal used the Polaroid Type 55 Pos/Neg 4x5, which produces both a positive and a negative when the shot is taken: this allowed each of the children to be given their own photographic image, while the negatives were developed and then printed on self-developing photographic printing out paper. These photographs represent a private space in which the young protagonists in addition to being curious witnesses to the process of capturing their own image establish a relationship of trust with the photographer.
Waukegan Portraits 1977 di Jack Sal è una serie di 47 ritratti scattati nell'estate del 1977. I protagonisti sono bambine e bambini dai 6 ai 14 anni con bisogni educativi speciali, che avevano frequentato un corso estivo di fotografia presso il Jack Benny Center for the Arts di Waukegan, nell'area metropolitana di Chicago. Alla fine del corso Sal ha utilizzato la Polaroid Type 55 Pos/Neg 4x5, che al momento dello scatto produce sia un positivo che un negativo: questo ha permesso di consegnare a ciascuno dei bambini la loro immagine fotografica, mentre i negativi sono stati sviluppati e stampati su carta fotografica autosviluppante. Questi scatti rappresentano uno spazio privato in cui i giovani protagonisti, oltre a essere testimoni curiosi del processo di cattura della propria immagine, instaurano un rapporto di fiducia con il fotografo.

Yes, there was a beautiful innocence, the era itself was more innocent. There was no internet and therefore also the idea that photos could be seen or used in other contexts. I have always thought that portraiture is one of the fundamental languages of photography because it represents not only the identity of the person portrayed but also a moment, a time that undeniably binds the subject to the author of the photograph." Sì, c'era una bella innocenza, l'epoca stessa era più innocente. Non esisteva internet e quindi anche l'idea che le foto potessero essere viste in altri contesti. Ho sempre pensato che il ritratto sia uno dei linguaggi fondamentali della fotografia, perché rappresenta non solo l'identità della persona ritratta ma anche un momento, un tempo che è quello che lega innegabilmente il soggetto all'autore della fotografia."
