Beneath one of Catholic Rome's holiest relics, the Scala Santa, lies a unique Roman institution, the non-profit gallery Sala 1. The stunning ex-basilica was restored and opened as an art center in 1970 by priest-sculptor Tito Amodei. For almost 40 years it has been a pioneer in Rome's art world, hosting premières of young artists and groundbreaking international exhibitions. The progressive program is supported by private companies and individuals as well as public funding, allowing freedom in its activities.
